At 600 km long, the South Island’s West Coast is relatively narrow, and sandwiched between the Southern Alps to the East, and the tempestuous Tasman Sea to the West.

Popular with tourists, the West Coast goes from Karamea in the north, to Haast in the south and is famous for it’s awe inspiring landscapes, annual rainfall (the highest in New Zealand) and easily accessible glaciers like the Fox and Franz Josef glaciers. Lakes like Mapourika at Franz Josef, and Matheson at Fox Glacier are simply stunning in the right conditions. The rivers of the West Coast, especially around Haast, such as the Haast River, and the mighty Arawhata, are simply too good to describe
