Buildings
Vulcan Hotel, St Bathans
One of the few surviving examples of Cobb (mud-brick) buildings still in use, is the Vulcan Hotel, complete with ghost, in the tiny former mining settlement of St Bathans north of Ranfurly. We stayed here with our infant son some years ago, although not in the haunted room! Map That image

Stone Remnants
The stone walls are all that remains of the original stone school house at St Bathans. Walking between the walls, in what must have once been the various rooms of the house instills a strange feeling. Map That Image
Sign of the Takahe
Constructed between 1918-1948, The Sign of the Takahe is one of a series of road-houses planned for travellers going over Dyers Pass to Lyttelton & Governors Bay. Today, the building is a well known restaurant, and Christchurch City icon, with a Category 1 Historic Places classification. Map That Image
Remnants
A large number of early European homes in Central Otago were built in the Cobb style, using mud mixed with straw for the walls. Only a few survive today as a result of constant exposure to the weather. Map That Image
Red Flagged
I believe (I stand to be corrected!) that this old factory was once part of one of the city’s flour mills. This series of 5 photos are likely the last you will see of the buildings as they were in late 2010. The Christchurch Earthquakes in Feb 2011 that laid waste to parts of the city also badly damaged this historic building, such that much of it has collapsed. Map That Image
